Southern Highlands Community Hospice

Bowral, NSW

Unknown at this stage

  • To masterplan the development of a vacant site in the centre of Bowral.

  • The site is extremely sensitive due to its location adjacent to St Judes Anglican Church, a state listed heritage item, and well established residential development within the heritage precinct of Bowral.

  • The hospice building was to be set in a landscaped surround responding to the needs its occupants (patients receiving palliative care).

  • Outcome
  • The project is still in its initial stages, however the master plan prepared for the site sets the guidelines which will determine the eventual outcome of the project and has been enthusiastically supported by the Hospice Committee.

  • The site is divided into two portions by using the building as the transition space between the two. The entrance is treated as a public space in a formal setting with landscape elements providing points of interest, colour and texture.

  • The rear portion of the site is dedicated to the use of the occupants and provides numerous options for quiet contemplation and private gatherings with appropriate landscape features.

  • The footprint of the building was minimised and all parking located in the basement, leaving the majority of the site available for appropriate landscape treatment.

  • The building will respond to its setting but will also provide an environment which is sympathetic and responsive to the needs of its occupants and their visitors, whilst a providing a functional workplace.
